SPORT, HIKING AND THE ISLAND´S LANDSCAPE

SPORT, HIKING AND THE ISLAND´S LANDSCAPE IS WRITTEN BY J.J. LAFORET, OFFICIAL CHRONICLER OF GRAN CANARIA.

Hiking, running and walking are the latest healthy activities which are useful and suitable for the current times, as they do not require more effort than the willingness to do it and consistency, and a whole wide world opens in front of us where sport, physical and mental health, culture and a friendly and pleasant atmosphere combine to make our lives sweeter.

Our island gives us a huge and unique range of possibilities: from the sea to the summit, each trail has its own characteristics, possibilities and different charms that have seduced many hikers, trail runners or simple mountain lovers. Most of them make this sport activity transcend to a cultural gesture, which is a perfect example of how sport stimulates and is integrated in the sport life. The technical and geographic study of the routes is added to their biological, anthropological and historic values as part of this culture. It is a magnificent rediscovery of the island’s landscape through a direct contact with it, with that part of the island that Domingo Doreste Fray Lesco described as a “miniature continent” which can be still rediscovered through every trail.

We currently have a variety of options to practice trail running or hiking in Gran Canaria in an attractive, safe, joyful and even festive way, where we can be amazed by our landscapes, traditions and habits in the diverse regions we have from the sea to the summit.

This sportive and cultural activity opens a wide range of participation possibilities, where sport, hiking and trail running are the tools to rediscover the landscapes of this high, round, robust island, where sea and earth fuse together as one in your eyes, and where the mountain’s landscape is varied and different, competing with the splendid beaches that surround the island. We can state with no hesitation that this miniature continent is suitable for a quiet and comforting hike.
