Cheese Route - Part 1

The Cheese Route can be defined as part of a pedestrian communication axis that runs through the highest territories in Gran Canaria and links the Massif Central and the towns surrounding Tirajana with the villages of Gáldar and Guía, on the other end of the island. It was mainly used by muleteers and, to a lesser extent, by farmers who transported their production on the backs of their animals in order to sell it in different villages. Also on the way back, they used to carry processed goods from those villages that were better communicated with the outside, among them, potatoes and seed for sowing.

WINE AND WATER ROUTE (2)

Vega de San Mateo

HOYA DEL GAMONAL

Both the special relief in this area and the trade winds provide a permanent fresh environment, even in summertime. The main part of this territory is a public property, shared between San Mateo Valley and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where most of the water that rises in Siete Fuentes (seven fountains) is collected. In the early XXth century, a british company extracted water in order to fulfill the growing needs of the city. The rising water was then transported by iron pìpelines from Hoya del Gamonal (Gamonal plain) to Llano de las Brujas (Witches’ plain), in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE WINE AND WATER ROUTE

Our route begins in the highest part of Gran Canaria, at Pozo de Las Nieves de Los Canónigos, an ancient well. From that point, it descends through the northern side of the island heading to San Mateo Valley. This route has two characteristics that bring its important ethnographic value: on one hand, there are many aquifers and places from which to extract water for the villages on the island; on the other hand, the path goes through one of the most important wine production places in Gran Canaria.
