ROCKS BATHED BY SALT

FRIDAY

20 OCTOBER

ROCKS BATHED BY SALT

You will have great fun following this refreshing 10 km coastal route, which runs from near Sardina pier to Puerto de Las Nieves. After a day full of discoveries, the perfect end awaits you, with a swim in the Atlantic Ocean in the fishing village’s calm natural pools.

Venture to the northwest of the island today and you will be dazzled by the coastal beauty that embraces this route between two ports. A 10 km awaits you, dotted with climbs and descents adding up to a total of +480 m and -506 m. It will test your endurance every time you cross a ravine. Although the total ascents and descents do not amount to a great deal, this route is moderately tough.

Along the way, wind turbines will greet us from afar, combining with the archaeological attractions of Cuesta Botija. You can stop for a picnic next to a blowhole, hypnotised by the ebb and flow of the sea. You will also visit the Morisca cave, the road to Puntagorda and the detour to Farallón. Finally, you will reach the welcoming Las Salinas natural pools, a haven of peace to end your day feeling the sea breeze.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Although the route runs along the coast, the cumulative ascent and descent reaches almost 900 metres. That means the path continually goes up and down along the entire route.

The technical difficulty is medium, as the terrain essentially consists of small slippery stones that require your full attention, as well as appropriate footwear.

You can stop to regain strength and eat after more than 5 km of the route, at a picturesque spot opposite El Juncal ravine.

Finally, as on all routes, you must carry at least 2 litres of water, sun protection and a hat, as well as being alert to the forecast weather conditions so you can have waterproof clothing available if necessary.

In addition, as this route ends at the sea, we recommend you bring a swimsuit, dry clothes and a small towel so you can enjoy bathing in the natural pools if you wish.

Children aged 16 and above can follow the route, accompanied by an adult. The time needed for each walk should be taken into account.

You are also reminded of your commitment to follow the indications and recommendations of guides at all times.

INTERESTING SPOTS

Farallón de Tábata
This impressive cliff rises majestically from the sea, creating a stunning visual spectacle and offering a unique habitat for a variety of seabirds. The view from the top is amazing, and you can see all the surrounding coastline and the vastness of the ocean.
Costa Botija archaeology centre
This important archaeological site offers a glimpse of Gran Canaria's pre-Hispanic past. Visitors can explore the ruins of native Canary Islander settlements and learn about the culture and customs of the island's first inhabitants.
Punta del Bufader
This is one of the most unusual natural phenomena on the north coast. The coastal rock formation has an opening that communicates with the sea, creating a “blowhole” or marine geyser that shoots seawater to a great height when the waves break against the rock.
Puerto del Juncal
This small port is a quiet, picturesque place, with traditional fishing boats. It is ideal for enjoying a quiet walk and appreciating the uniqueness of the Gran Canaria coast.
Moro Cave
This natural cave is one of the island’s geological treasures. Moro cave is known for its incredible rock formations and its archaeological importance, as it contains engravings and artefacts from the first inhabitants of Gran Canaria.
Las Salinas de Agaete natural pool
They look like a medieval fortress, although they are filled with pleasant sea water. These three excellent natural pools, protected from the open sea, resemble a castle because of their battlement-like concrete pylons, which further reduce the onslaught of the waves. These pools, connected by volcanic pipes, have everything you need to enjoy a relaxing swim and great views of the northwest coastal cliffs.
