Route 1. Pine trees that give way to impressive palm trees
Gran Canaria Walking Festival 2019 kicks off on October 23rd with THE PALM GROVE RETREAT route. In this edition, the routes will tour seven municipalities on the island of Gran Canaria highlighting the beauty of the landscapes that we will find in our path.
This route is characterized by the contrast of the landscapes and vegetation that we will discover during the tour. We will begin the journey in “Pico de la Gorra” on the summits of the island and from this privileged place we will begin our descent through "Cruz del Socorro" appreciating the change of landscapes and vegetation of these places. In this way, we will leave behind the pine forests, characteristic vegetation of the summit to enter paths in which the palm trees will guide us to the heart of the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana.
The “Vueltas de Adeje” road will be the one chosen to make the descent from the summit. This place known for its zigzagging trails, which were once used to communicate the town of Santa Lucía de Tirajana with the highest areas of the island, as well as for its use for the transhumance of sheep and goats that were looking for grass in summer, will allow us to appreciate the unique beauty of the southeast of the island.
At the end of this path we will find the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana from which we can contemplate the spectacular views of the ravines and palm groves of the “Caldera de Tirajana”.
We will finish our tour in the Country Houses El Olivar, curious buildings whose history dates back to the first settlements of the conquerors of the island of Gran Canaria. There we will not only contemplate the wealth of our island but also taste it. We can assess the taste of local products while commenting on the wonders discovered during our journey.
The Palm Grove Retreat is a linear route with a length of approximately 10.8 kilometers that describes the following itinerary: Pico de la Gorra-Cruz del Socorro-Vueltas de Adeje-Santa Lucía de Tirajana-Casa Rural el Olivar. It will have 70 meters of upward path and 1250 meters of downward path. We estimate to make the route in an approximate time of four and a half hours. Taking into account the aforementioned data, the difficulty of the route has been classified as “medium”.
Remember that the routes include liability insurance, accident insurance, picnic, guided route and interpreter of the natural, ethnographic and cultural values of the island, and specialized guides on trails in several languages.
In addition, the organization provides two collection points at the beginning and end of the route, participants must choose one of them. The meeting points are:
• Alfredo Kraus Auditorium - Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
• Tourist Information Office, next to CC Yumbo Centrum- Playa del Inglés
